Informatica

You deal with them when you make a phone call, withdraw money, request a student grant, register with the City, borrow a book from the university library or book a trip: computers. These powerful calculators are part and parcel of today’s society. Computer technology is just as essential in the academic world.
Computer Science also covers topics you might not immediately associate with it, such as three-dimensional image recognition, the theory behind translation systems, the analysis of skin tissue, and unmanned space landings on Mars.

The bachelor’s programme in Computer Science teaches students to develop and improve computer systems. In view of growing automation, it is not surprising that this new science should be on the rise. This means there is quite a demand for well-trained computer scientists.
The programme covers computer programming, steering systems and networks, data bases and translator construction as well as artificial intelligence and multimedia. A solid theoretical foundation is provided in such fields as logic, reasoning and computability.

Computer Science is an internationally oriented study programme. Foreign researchers regularly spend time at the UvA and a great deal of the research is conducted in the framework of international research projects.

It is also possible to do part of the programme abroad.
After the programme is completed, graduates are given a Bachelor of Science degree.

Master's programmes

The UvA offers a wide range of master's programmes, taught either in English or in Dutch. Follow the link below for an overview of these programmes (in Dutch).

The job market

Job prospects for graduates in computer science are very favourable. The field of IT is growing rapidly and skilled IT staff are much wanted.

Potential professions include: systems designer, programmer, management- and consultant positions at for example employers such as research centres of for instance TNO, KNMI and AKZO, IT firms, university hospitals (for instance for medical image processing) or automation divisions or large banking companies.

Besides, many graduates of computer science opt for independent entrepreneurship.

Additional entry requirements

Apart from the entry requirements which apply to all students (see below) the following applies to school subjects:

  • Compulsory: Mathematics
  • Students are expected to have a good command of English since most of the literature is in English

Application and admission

The application procedure for regular study programmes taught in Dutch depends on the country where you have obtained your diploma. Follow the link below for detailed information on application and admission.
