Tax Law
Contents of the programme
Fiscaal recht
Individuals and firms pay their taxes. This is how they contribute towards financing the state expenditures. Taxes need to be levied in a way that is equitable and fair. Fiscal law focuses on how this can best be done. The bachelor’s in Tax Law teaches students how to interpret and apply the tax laws.
It is important to bear in mind that tax laws are subject to constant change. Certain taxes are levied in an effort to steer social trends. Ecotax was introduced for example in an effort to reduce environmental pollution.
Sometimes tax laws change to combat tax evasion or make it possible to charge higher taxes. International developments such as the increasing number of Dutch firms that open branches abroad also play a role.
Tax Law students address the question of how to divide the tax burden as fairly as possible over the population.
The bachelor’s in Tax Law starts with the general introductory course in Jurisprudence, which is taken with students at the other two bachelor’s study programmes in law at the UvA. In the first year there are also courses in constitutional law, liability law, contract law, settling disputes and the history of European law.
Since it is important for legal professionals to be able to express themselves well in writing, attention is also devoted to writing skills. After the general first year, it is possible to transfer without losing any time to one of the other bachelor’s study programmes in law.
If you go on with Tax Law, you take subjects like tax law including international tax law, social security law, turnover tax, personal, family and inheritance tax, economics and formal tax law.
As a student, you can gain practical experience by working at a Tax Advice Centre. The Faculty of Law has an extensive international education network, so there is ample opportunity to do part of the study programme abroad.
After completing the bachelor’s, graduates are given a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL B).
The job market
Job prospects for graduates of fiscal law are good. You can find work as tax inspector for the Tax Department or as legal adviser for banks, insurance companies, or the state.
Depending on the elective courses you have taken you can also become a robed lawyer, judge or public prosecuter.
