Amsterdam is a relatively safe city with a pleasant atmosphere which will make you soon feel at home. There are however some precautions you should take when visiting any big city.

Bike riding

Bikes are the favourite means of transport in the Netherlands. The UvA has a special bike rental scheme specifically for international students.

Public transport

The Netherlands has an excellent public transport system. You can get almost anywhere you want on the train, bus, or tram.
