Stimulating scientific environment

The Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the UvA provides a stimulating scientific environment. The science labs are organized in theme-oriented scientific institutes with a high level of interaction and collaboration, and accommodate over 400 graduate students involved in PhD studies.

At the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the AMC, the programme of each graduate student revolves around the subject of his or her PhD thesis, whether it is a clinical study, basic science or a public health project.

Research in the AMC is theme-oriented. Each theme represents a main multidisciplinary research area which is covered by long-term translational and clinical research programmes.

Admission

Students with a master’s degree from a registered academic institution in such diverse disciplines as Medicine, Medical Informatics, Sciences (biology, medical biology, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry or medical chemistry) or Behavioral Sciences (psychology, health sciences), as well as selected bachelor’s with an honours degree are eligible for admission.

PhD Course Programmes

The 'AMC Graduate School for Medical Sciences' offers PhD students an opportunity to improve their skills in and to develop their understanding of scientific research aimed, allowing them to become more proficient and efficient researchers. The programme contains both basic knowledge and skills as well as theoretical and practical knowledge on the subject matter concerned.
