Communication Science (Research MSc)

The Research Master in Communication Science is a two-year MSc programme developed for motivated students who are looking for an excellent education in communication science. The programme combines theoretical courses with a thorough training in conducting research, and concentrates on the production, uses and impact of information and mediated communication in informing, persuading and entertaining audiences.

The current multimedia era, in which digital technologies not only provide new means of communication (the Internet, mobile phones) but also transform older ones (print, broadcasting), is shaping today's information and communication processes to an increasing degree. This presents interesting challenges for theory and research. Topics covered include:

  • media entertainment and popular culture
  • political communication
  • journalism
  • health communication
  • advertising
  • PR

The approach is multidisciplinary: core theories in communication science are combined with theories and methods from political science, sociology, psychology and economics.

Studying Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam

Students develop their research skills in a ‘hands on' way by participating in one of their professors' research projects. These projects are conducted within the Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR), a research institute in the field of communication science housed within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the University of Amsterdam.

It is the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and among the largest worldwide. More than 50 senior researchers are associated with ASCoR and some 30 students participate in its English-language PhD programme.

The institute's facilities include a communication laboratory. Research training includes courses focusing on research issues. Students have the option specialising in either empirical-analytical methodology or interpretative methodology, while at the same time gaining a broader methodological perspective.

Accreditation and degree

The quality of this master's programme has been positively assessed (accredited) by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally recognised Master of Science (MSc) degree in Communication Science. You can find more information on accreditation and degrees through the links below.
