About Biomedical research carried out at the University of Amsterdam.
Focus on research: theoretical physicist and neuroscientist Francesco Battaglia
The four walls are draped in black ceiling-to-floor curtains, and Francesco Battaglia makes sure the door is covered too once we have sealed ourselves in the room. The laboratory is now pitch black. During experiments, he explains, even the lights are switched off. Battaglia studies the behaviour of rats and mice: nocturnal animals.

Academic Medical Center (AMC)
The Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam is the most prominent medical centre in the Netherlands and one of its largest hospitals. Several research groups within the medical center contribute to the MSc programme in Biomedical Sciences. Students following the track in either Medical Biochemistry or Medical Biology will be taught partly in the AMC and can choose to do their research training here.

Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL)
NKI-AVL is an integrated cancer institute, combining a research laboratory and hospital in one independent organisation. The laboratory covers all major areas of basic cancer research, with emphasis on (epi)genetics, mouse tumour models, cell biology, immunology, structural biology and drug development. The NKI-AVL also pursues various translational research lines requiring close collaboration between clinical and basic research staff.

Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation
The Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation was established in 1998 through a merger between the Dutch blood banks and the Central Laboratory of the Netherlands Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service. It delivers products and services, provides education and conducts scientific research. In the Sanquin Research department scientists pursue fundamental, clinical and applied research that contributes to our knowledge and practice of transfusion medicine.
