Gender, Sexuality and Society (MSc)

The holder of a Bachelor's degree of the College of Social Sciences of the University of Amsterdam is considered to possess the knowledge, insight and skills referred to below, and will be admitted to the programme on these grounds. This also concerns the holder of a Bachelor's degree Bèta-Gamma of the University of Amsterdam, provided that the student has completed a major in Sociology (90 EC).

All other applications will be carefully evaluated by the admissions committee. The committee determines whether or not all entry requirements as specified below are met.

International diplomas are evaluated on the basis of advice from professional diploma evaluators. The minimum level of the diploma should be equivalent to three years of Dutch university education.

Specific entry requirements

Bachelor's degree
Gender, Sexuality and Society (Msc Sociology) seeks students with an academic Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a discipline closely related to the programme, such as sociology and cultural/social anthropology.

Applicants are expected to have a solid basis in the field of social sciences theory of at least (an equivalent of) 30 ECTS credits earned during previous study

Research methodology
Applicants should have sufficient knowledge of social sciences research methodology reflected by the completion of at least (an equivalent of) 20 ECTS credits during previous study. Promising candidates with less than 10 ECTS credits of social sciences research methodology may be admitted provided they complete an intensive one-month research methodology module first.

General entry requirements

English language proficiency
All non-native speakers of English (including Dutch students) applying to one of the English-taught programmes offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences, are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English.

You are considered to be a native speaker if you are a national from the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand and the language in which you gained all your qualifications was English.

Applicants who have obtained a Bachelor's degree at the College of Social Sciences of the University of Amsterdam are expected to be proficient in English and do not need to submit an English language test score. As from September 2010, the College of Social Sciences will offer a special English language module that will prepare students to undertake an English taught master. College of Social Sciences students who will start per September 2010 with an English taught master are advised to participate in the IELTS test organised by the UvA.

All other applicants are expected to submit an English test score. Inability to do so will prevent enrollment.  For more information, please see the link below.
