The Research Master's programme in Forensic Science is made possible due to strategic cooperation with the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), one of the leading forensic institutes in the world, the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) and the Netherlands Police Academy.

Focus on research: Maurice Aalders and Arian van Asten

‘Join the matrix.’ Although spoken somewhat in jest, this phrase does more or less describe what Maurice Aalders and Arian van Asten are doing. Since mid-December, they have been busy setting up the new Amsterdam Centre for Forensic Studies (ACFS), a partnership between the AMC, the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Forensic Institute.

Research on shape of blood drops at a crime scene

The FOM Foundation has awarded a valorisation grant to Prof. Daniel Bonn. He will use his expertise in the area of fluid dynamics to investigate blood drops. The aim of the research is to determine precisely where the blood spatters at a crime scene originate from based on their shape.

Dr M. Sjerps has been named professor by special appointment of Forensic Statistics at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Science (FNWI).

Focus on research: forensic DNA expert Ate Kloosterman

Forensic DNA expert Ate Kloosterman has been a researcher with the Nederlands Forensisch Intituut (NFI) [the Netherlands Forensic Institute] for years and is the expert in the area of DNA profiling. Since recently he has, as a professor by special appointment at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, been teaching University of Amsterdam Master’s students the tricks of his exciting trade.

The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) is an agency operated by the Ministry of Justice and falls under the Directorate-General for Law Enforcement. The NFI is one of the leading forensic institutes and conducts technical scientific analysis to help solve crimes.
