European Union in a Global Order (MSc)
Introduction
- How will the current sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone affect the European Union’s position in the world?
- How does the EU respond to social and political instability in its own direct neighborhood?
- Do old and new external security threats (like migration, global warming, energy dependency, new wars) prompt EU member states to get their act together?
The European Union in a Global Order programme provides students with a theoretical and empirical understanding of the EU's external relations. It deals with the idea of a double movement, with a dual focus:
- on the internal determination of the EU's external relations and actions (like the role of state and non-state actors in the development of a Common Foreign and Security Policy, the actual decision-making process, its instruments),
- and on the impact of global developments, challenges and threats on foreign policy-making at the European and Member State level.
European Union in a Global Order is a theoretically and methodologically pluralist and interdisciplinary programme. Social, economic, political and cultural processes of change (at different levels of analysis) are seen as mutually constitutive. The programme's focus is on the EU's external / international / foreign relations rather than politics or economics.
For students interested in this field of study, we also offer a two- year Research Master.
'Tomorrow's world will be more global and interdependent than today's. This Master's programme gives our students the theoretical and empirical tools they need to understand Europe's position and role in this ongoing process.'
- Otto Holman, Programme Director, European Union in a Global Order.
Studying European Union in a Global Order at the University of Amsterdam
In addition to the quality and uniqueness of its curriculum and instruction, a distinct advantage of the Master's programme European Union in a Global Order is its location in the city of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a city with a long and important history in the development of European and global relations, commerce and law. Today it is among the most lively, diverse and cosmopolitan cities in the world. The University of Amsterdam's location in this city manifests what the EUGO programme explores: the history and diversity of European and global politics from a multidisciplinary and multidimensional perspective. The faculty of the UvA's Political Science department include researchers who have published internationally on a range of topics relating to European Foreign Relations.
