Educational Sciences (Research MSc)
Like getting private instruction
Graduate School of Child Development and Education

'My name is Loes van Gelderen and I am one of the very first research Master's students. Initially, when I began my Bachelor's programme in Pedagogical Sciences, I was planning to work in welfare services after graduation. But then I took the courses ‘Diagnostics', ‘Pedagogical Skills' and ‘Research Laboratory' during my third year and discovered that in fact I am more interested in the research side of the field. I decided to enrol in the research Master in Education Sciences, which I began this year, and I'm very satisfied with the programme so far. Since we are in a group of only five students, it's almost like getting private instruction. This is a great aspect of the programme, because it means that we really interact in seminars. We also have a lot of freedom in choosing our courses, so you can shape a curriculum that is tailored to your specific interests.'
'Writing papers was not a big component of my Bachelor's programme, but in the research Master's programme we write a paper at the end of nearly every course. I really like that we have so many opportunities to refine our writing. Another plus is that that we are encouraged to spend a few months studying abroad. Ultimately this stimulated me to register for an exchange programme (something I had already wanted to do during my Bachelor's study). In August I will be going to San Francisco to stay for five months - I'm looking forward to it so much!'
'I am really happy that I decided to enrol in this Master. I have learned a great deal over the past months and I like the fact that I determine which subjects to take myself (with the exam committee's approval, of course). So for anyone who wants to go beyond a one-year Master's programme and is also interested in conducting research, I would say: apply for a place in the research Master in Education Sciences!'
