Chemistry (MSc)
The Master's programme in Chemistry exposes students to research at the frontline of a fascinating discipline. Both nationally and internationally chemistry has been acknowledged as playing a key role in social and economic progress. It now forms the bridge between biology at one end of the spectrum (biomolecular chemistry) and physics and mathematics at the other (physical-theoretical chemistry). Traditionally, organic and analytical chemistry (synthesising and measuring) lie at the heart of the discipline. As a multifaceted science, chemistry is an exciting field of study in which every student can find an area suited to their individual talents and ambitions.
Studying Chemistry at the University of Amsterdam
The Master's programme in Chemistry is a two-year programme taught entirely in English, in which students can specialise in the field that interests them most. It is possible, for example, to devise a programme that combines chemistry with biology or to focus on the physical or theoretical aspects of chemistry.

The University of Amsterdam received high marks in the Centre for Higher Education Development's (CHE) ranking of leading European graduate programmes. This ranking system was specially developed for the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. In 2007 the UvA's Master's programmes in Chemistry and Physics were awarded CHE Excellence Group status.
The Master's programme in Chemistry has been accreditated with the Euromaster label by the European Chemistry Thematics Network (ECTN). This is a quality label for chemistry education in Europe, which facilitates students to do part of their Master's programme abroad.
Science in Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) collaborates closely with the VU University Amsterdam in most of the tracks in physics, chemistry and mathematics. Both universities have an excellent international reputation, with several research groups playing leading roles in various scientific fields. Their collaboration has resulted in a range of high-quality Master of Science programmes. As a result of this cooperative relationship, students benefit from the expertise, the existing networks and collaborative projects of both universities.
European Master's programme AtoSiM
The UvA also collaborates with the Ėcole Normale Supérieure in Lyon (France) and Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) in offering the ‘European' AtoSiM Master. AtoSiM is taught within the framework of the Erasmus Mundus programme and is designed for students who are highly motivated and have an excellent academic record.
Accreditation and degree
The Master's programme in Chemistry has been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Chemistry and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
