Human Centered Multimedia

Why opt for Human Centered Multimedia?

Because you are interested in the interaction between people and technology and new media, and the way in which that same technology supports, hampers and influences them. You will be asking yourself what people need and how technology can help them to achieve their goals. You want to liaise between corporate and organisational management and the people responsible for developing technological solutions. You have a broad interest in the functionality of new technology and new media. You are creative, and prepared to look beyond standard solutions. Your focus is on the end user.

Advanced presentation and visualisation methods are very useful for displaying complex information in a clear way.

What can Human Centered Multimedia offer you?

The Human Centered Multimedia Master track offers a unique one-year programme during which you will be analysing issues relating to visualisation technology, information retrieval, semantic web technology, mobile systems, privacy, metadata and cognitive tools. The city of Amsterdam is ideally suited to research on these issues. It offers an environment of unrivalled innovation and is one of the most important European centres in the area of ICT and new media.

During the programme you will analyse systems for the supply, storage and communication of information based around intelligent communication between humans and computers by means of various media: images, video, speech and text. These include:

  • You point the camera in your mobile phone at a specific location for an overview of all the houses for sale nearby, the location of the nearest cash machine and how old the houses are. You can then use your phone to view video brochures of interesting properties in the neighbourhood.
  • The public broadcasting networks have now fully digitised their audiovisual archives. As a result, users now have interactive access to news, documentaries and quiz shows. But how do you go about finding exactly what you're looking for amongst huge quantities of data?
  • Digital learning environments need multimedia sources and graphic presentations in order to communicate with users. How do you go about visualising information in a user-friendly manner, and which tools can students use to visualise their own knowledge?
