Application and admission

Master Software Engineering

Admission requirements

The Software Engineering Master’s programme admits students with the following qualifications:

1. University Bachelor’s degree
A university Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Technical Computer Science from the UvA or another Dutch university offers unconditional access to the Master’s programme.
If you have a different university Bachelor’s degree from the ones mentioned above, you must submit a request for admission to the Software Engineering Master’s programme to the examinations board. The board will then determine whether you can be admitted to the Master’s programme on the basis of your Bachelor’s courses, study results and motivation.

2. Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences/practical experience
The Software Engineering Master’s programme is also accessible to students who have completed a Computer Science study programme or comparable programme at a university of applied sciences. An intake interview and admission test will be conducted to determine the need for additional courses and/or literature surveys.
If you already have real-world experience and would like to gain more in-depth knowledge of software engineering, you are also eligible to participate in the Software Engineering Master’s programme on either a full-time or part-time basis. Students can complete the part-time study programme on the basis of either one or two days’ attendance per week. The graduation process will take longer, and prospective students should expect a full-time study load during the final months of the study programme.

Admission is subject to the same requirements applied to incoming students from research universities and universities of applied sciences.

Application procedure

If you are interested in taking part in the Master’s programme, you will be required to fill out an application. This application does not count as a registration, and does not obligate you to register for the programme. Once your application has been processed, you will be invited to attend an intake interview with the Master’s programme coordinator. The study programme examinations board will then determine whether you can be admitted to the Master’s programme. If you are eligible for admission, you will receive a statement of admission that allows you to register for the programme.

Pre-Master's programme

The lecturers will put together a tailor-made pre-Master’s programme based on a non-committal intake interview and admission test. The objective is to provide you with an optimally integrated programme that will minimise any loss of time and prepare you for the Master’s programme as effectively as possible. Depending on your previous education and knowledge, you may be required to read additional literature or take one or more preparatory courses. This personalised pre-Master’s programme helps ensure that the Master’s programme has one of the university’s highest pass rates (82 percent).
