Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image (Professional MA)

Moving images are part of our most cherished but also fleeting cultural heritage. As well as capturing memory and history, they carry myriad other important data. How is this audiovisual material preserved for future generations and how is it best presented today as a source of information, culture and entertainment, to a general or specialised audience?

The Professional Master's programme in Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image addresses these questions in theory and practice. Students spend the first year acquiring critical knowledge, which is put into practice during an internship during the second year.

Studying Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image at the University of Amsterdam

The city and University of Amsterdam provide an ideal location not only for an academic programme, but also for an internship. The Master highlights the role of preserving and presenting moving images as key activity of archives, film museums, festivals, distributors, broadcasting companies and majors film, cooperating with various local and regional audiovisual institutes (e.g. the Film Museum, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, and Montevideo TBA/The Netherlands Media Art Institute). Archives and festival organisers not only supervise student interns, but are also in charge of some of the academic modules, contributing with a professional background to the development of an effective curriculum.

Accreditation and degree

The quality of this master's programme has been positively assessed (accredited) by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally recognised master's degree in Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image and the title Master of Arts (MA).
