General Linguistics

Educational background

studied English language and literature with an emphasis on linguistics at St. Petersburg University in Russia.

Why General Linguistics?

My reason for choosing the MA in General Linguistics was that I wanted to broaden my knowledge in linguistics. I wanted to continue my studies in the Netherlands because I am married to a Dutch man. The Universiteit van Amsterdam was recommended to me because of its good reputation for socio-linguistics.

Later, I may wish to pursue a PhD, but first I want to have some work experience. The great advantage of linguistic education is that you can do any kind of research on a very high level.

About the programme

This MA programme has no core courses only electives structured in different study path. You can even choose courses from other MA programmes as long as the programme director approves, which I find one of the great advantages of studying in this faculty. This was no surprise to me as the information provided before I enrolled was very clear.

My study path is socio-linguistics and I have been happy with every single subject I have completed so far. The professors make every course challenging and they are very enthusiastic. If you are particularly interested in a certain subject they happily provide you with extra material. Everyone needs to participate in the classes, which have the structure of seminars. The professor direct class discussions, and all students have to give presentations using powerpoint, slides, or beamers. We are taught useful presentation skills this way as well as linguistics.

About the Universiteit van Amsterdam

The (digital) library and the computer facilities are really great. You can have a connection with other libraries in the Netherlands through the internet.

About the city and the Netherlands

Living in Amsterdam is great, the city is small in size and very accessible, certainly with a bike. You can find lots of things to do here on a cultural level, going out, meeting people. I like it here and I feel at home.

This MA programme is meant for students who

have a proper background in linguistics and are interested in broadening their knowledge. You need to know what exactly you want to study before you come here. Students need to plan their time efficiently regarding studies, work and fun time.

Tip for new students

I advise students to take a Dutch course; if you live in a country, you need to speak the language. The quality of the courses offered at INTT is good. A course there takes only six weeks, so it is very intense, but it is worth while.
