Laura Basu from Great Britain

Film Studies

Educational background

I have a BA in American Literature from Sussex University, Great Britain. I spent one year abroad at Berkeley University, California, USA.

Why Film Studies?

I wanted to go abroad, do an English taught MA programme. I applied for American Studies and Film Studies and got accepted for both. I decided to do the MA in Film Studies. I am interested in Film, the programme looked good and Thomas Elsaesser is quite a big name. I had done a reasonable number of Film courses before. Ideally I would like to continue studying a PhD after I will have finished this MA programme.

About the programme

I think the Film programme here is different from a lot of other MA programmes in Film Studies. It is very theoretical, which is good for me. I like the structure of having a lecture followed by a work seminar. Our class has about fifteen students.

We have had a few classes on the thesis proposal. The tutors are trying to help us develop our interests although I am not sure what I will write my thesis on yet. The students in my class have got very different backgrounds, which I think is great.

About the Universiteit van Amsterdam

There are enough facilities at the University of Amsterdam, but I think the libraries and the computer centres should be open later. The digital library is really useful.

About the city and the Netherlands

Amsterdam has a welcoming atmosphere there are lots of cinemas, art exhibitions, and festivals. It is a big city but people are really friendly, I have never felt alone.  It helps that everyone speaks English so well. I am taking Dutch lessons. When you do not know the language you don’t know what is going on.

This MA programme is meant for students who

are interested in film theory.

Tip for new students

Be prepared to speak up in class, because it can be quite intimidating to speak in front of all those people.
