Cultural Analysis (Research MA)

Educational background

I studied Cultural Studies with an emphasis on critical thought at the Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Why Cultural Analysis?

I had a professor who did her PhD in the ASCA programme at the University of Amsterdam and also taught as a visiting professor. I found the research and publications related to ASCA of great interest and was happy to discover good scholars on the website. Because I felt that being abroad for my MA would improve my career prospects after graduation, I went to Amsterdam.

About the programme

The group of students participating in the MA is one of the best groups I have been involved with. And although I was a bit confused the first semester regarding course content, in the second semester I have come to settle in better in the academic community.

About the Universiteit van Amsterdam

I have had nothing but help from the university here and they have facilitated my stay in The Netherlands in the best possible way. From greeting me on arrival to recovering my USB key several times from the library. Everyone at the university has been extremely helpful and kind.

About the city and the Netherlands

I really enjoy Amsterdam. It is a beautiful city and it is great to be able to bike everywhere. It is great for studying in the wintertime (as we all know about the weather), but when the sun comes out I think the academic level may drop somewhat - one ends up thinking outside of a cafe rather than in a lecture hall.

I recommend this MA programme to students...

for several reasons. There are some very good professors attached to the programme and to ASCA, but there are also excellent scholars at the UvA in general and every student has the choice to take their electives in many numerous departments. I can't express enough how the group dynamic with both the Dutch and international students has been very enriching here. I believe we have all grown in our work together while also enjoying the cosmopolitan environment of Amsterdam.

Tip for new students

Find people to work with in the programme not only at the level of the professors but in your group as well. Enjoy the city. Don't be a shut in. This is a great place to live and work and probably one of the best places to be a student.
