English Language and Culture

Why English Langauge and Culture?
I wanted to continue my studies in English literature and thought that a one-year MA programme abroad would provide a different perspective to my undergraduate degree. Eventually, I might want to teach in Canada and abroad, or perhaps pursue a career in publishing and journalism.
About the programme
The programme is both interesting and challenging. Students are expected to work independently, but there are plenty of opportunities to discuss and exchange ideas with professors and other students.
While the department of English Language and Culture is relatively small in numbers of staff, it is quite multidisciplinary and there are many different courses on offer. Students are encouraged to create their own programme within the framework of all that is available to them, and are encouraged to participate in tutorials in which they work closely with a professor on a topic of their choice. I was particularly interested in the theoretical aspects behind the study of literature and culture, so I complemented my studies with a course from comparative literature.
Most of the professors are native English speakers and they are experts in their respective fields, so the academic quality of this programme is high. The professors are very engaging and accessible, which fosters a great atmosphere both within class and during office hours. The students in this MA programme come from all over the world, which creates a wonderful environment for discussion and cultural exchange
About the Universiteit van Amsterdam
I was really surprised by the number of activities that are organised by the CREA, the cultural centre of the university, and by the sports facilities open to students.
The computer facilities are good, and the libraries are quite satisfactory. While buildings are scattered throughout the city centre, it is a good idea to get a bike in order to take advantage of all the services that the university offers.
About the city and the Netherlands
I really enjoy discovering the city. Amsterdam is such a dynamic place and there is always something going on. The city offers a healthy dose of cultural activities such as concerts, theatre, and museums and there are so many great cafés and restaurants within the city that it’s almost impossible to get bored.
Amsterdam is a very international city with many tourists and foreigners so one doesn’t feel too out of place. Although most people speak English, it is a good idea to learn a little Dutch.
