Philosophy

Educational background

I have a BA Joint Honours in History and Philosophy from the University of Exeter, Great Britain.

Why Philosophy?

I wanted to continue my studies in philosophy but also wanted to live abroad. The MA programme in Philosophy is taught in English. It is very flexible and has a wide range of topics to choose from so I knew I would be able to construct a course to suit my own interests.

About the programme

The flexibility of being able to choose from a wide range of modules is good and you really can create a programme designed just for your particular interests. It would be great if all courses were taught in English. There were some really interesting options on offer but these courses were taught in Dutch.

About the Universiteit van Amsterdam

The university is spread throughout the city. It was a bit of a mission to hunt down all of the different buildings. My housing is amazing, right in the centre of the city, clean, nice and friendly. There are plenty of computer labs around, although the opening hours could be longer. The internet access at home makes a huge difference though.
There are loads of activities for the international community but it would be nice to have more social time with the Dutch students.

About the city and the Netherlands

I find Amsterdam a really cool city. It has lived up to all my expectations. For a capital city it has a very small village feel to it and there is a great deal to see and do. I really like riding my bike, although you have to watch out for police looking to fine you for minor offences, they love it. Amsterdam is a great city to be a student in, there is always something going on. I have been to most of the museums in the city now. The cinema’s are great and they do not dub the films and Bagels and Beans is a fantastic place to have lunch!

On the other hand, dealing with Dutch bureaucracy can be a challenge sometimes, mainly with getting a sofi number and opening a bank account.

I recommend this MA programme to any student because

living here is great and the programme is flexible; it is down to what you make of it. If I could do it again I would.
