Career prospects

Western Esotericism (MA)

The one-year programmes in the Master Theology and Religious Studies have a primarily explorative character. It prepares students for a career in teaching, journalism or any of the other writing professions, as well as for an advisory or managerial position in a public organisation or government institution. It also provides students with the basic knowledge and skills that will enable them to pursue a professional career at the academic level in any of the diverse fields of research or general education, particularly where the study of religion is involved.

Research

Graduates can also opt to continue their studies in the Research Master's programme Religious Studies, which offers an excellent opportunity for those interested in pursuing a PhD in the field. Students who have completed one of the one-year programmes in the Master in Theology and Religious Studies are usually able to complete the two-year Research Master in one year. Due to the limited number of places available in the Research Master's programme, all applicants must undergo a selection procedure.

What our alumni say

Dylan Burns from the USA completed his degree in 2004.

‘I'm working on a PhD in Ancient Christianity at Yale University's Department of Religious Studies. When I finish here in 2010, I hope to continue teaching and researching topics in late Antique religions.'
