Musicology (MA)

Students who have completed the Bachelor's programme in Musicology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) will have gained an in-depth knowledge of Western or World Music, acquired theoretical and practical skills and perhaps taken optional courses and a minor to familiarise themselves with other academic disciplines. The Master's programme in Musicology allows students to conduct further research in their chosen field of study, such as the music of India or the development of modern twentieth-century compositions.

Studying Musicology at the University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam's Musicology programme covers a wide range of topics, including music of the world, contemporary expressions of music, western classical music of all periods, theory of music, cognition, cultural musicology, and pop and jazz. The focus is on intercultural music(ology).

What our students say

Michiel Jongejan from the Netherlands completed the Master's programme in Musicology.

"I played classical piano since I was ten years old. I decided to study musicology in order to explore the academic side of classical music."
