General Linguistics

General linguistics is the study of the universal properties of language as they manifest themselves in the language system, the language capacity of individual language users, the use of language in varying social circumstances and the application of linguistic knowledge in technological environments.

Please note that this is not a programme in Applied Linguistics!

Studying General Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has renowned specialists in this field and offers training through an integrated programme provided by the Departments of Language Technology, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics and Language Pathology, Second Language Acquisition, Sign Linguistics and Theoretical Linguistics.

Accreditation and degree

The programme in General Linguistics has been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Linguistics and the title of Master of Arts (MA).
