Film Studies (MA)

Unique in continental Europe, the Film Studies track of the MA in Media and Culture aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the aesthetics and history of audiovisual media, with film occupying a central role.

This is not a film production programme. Students who complete this degree gain a thorough theoretical understanding of the various facets of cinema.

Studying Film Studies at the University of Amsterdam

Students have privileged access to historical sources and film collections. Internationally renowned film scholars are appointed as faculty and guest lecturers. Teaching in the programme is strongly informed by the way film is taught internationally, notably in the United States, Britain and France, thus giving students the opportunity to keep abreast of wider developments in the field.

Accreditation and degree

Film Studies is a track of the master's programme in Media en cultuur (Media and Culture). This master’s programme has been legally accredited by the Dutch government in 2002. This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally accredited master's degree in Media en cultuur and the title Master of Arts (MA). Before 2010, the study programme will be presented to the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) for renewal of the accreditation. You can find more information on accreditation and degrees through the link below.
