European Union Law

Dr. R.H. van Ooik, director Master EU Law:

'The Master programme in EU Law at the University of Amsterdam is known as one of the best in the world. Yearly it attracts around fifty studens from some thirty different countries.'

Introduction

Studying European Union law at the University of Amsterdam encourages students to look beyond black-letter European law and introduces them to ‘governance’ and ‘law in practice’ approaches. The European Union is in constant development, produces new legal problems and solutions almost daily. The Master track European Union law includes new academic insights and legal developments promptly in its courses, without losing sight of the broader legal perspectives. The European Union Law track provides students with a sound basis in EU law and on top of that offers them a large number of optional courses that together may form a personalized specialisation (focusing on European competition law, European environmental law, European migration law, European criminal law, law of the internal market, European constitutional law, European administrative law, law of the economic and monetary union, and more).

Studying European Union Law at the University of Amsterdam

The academic staff are highly qualified European and international lawyers who use skill-focused and research-based teaching methods. All staff members are also part of the research community of the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG). Under the leadership of Professor Deirdre Curtin, ACELG has quickly developed into a research centre of excellence that hosts many events and lectures beyond the teaching curriculum, which students may attend. These events offers additional stimulus for students to develop an independent and critical approach to their knowledge of European Union law.
