European Competition Law and Regulation

Introduction

The European Competition Law and Regulation programme offers a unique opportunity to specialize in competition law and study the regulatory framework applicable to economic activities in Europe. The programme combines theory and practice and is taught both by academics and practitioners. This master track prepares students with the skills necessary for a professional or academic career in competition law in today’s Europe.

Studying European Competition Law and Regulation at the University of Amsterdam combines in a distinct manner both theory and practice and is taught by highly qualified international and European lawyers and lecturers. The quality of the programme is enriched by the University of Amsterdam's academic strength in both law and economics through the Amsterdam Centre for Law & Economics (ACLE) and in law and governance through the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG). Furthermore, students  may participate in a study trip to Brussels, where they become familiar with a wide range of European institutions. The university staff also provides  guidance and assistance to students in finding internships and in identifying career opportunities once they have successfully completed the Master's programme.'

European Competition Law and Regulation focuses on the European public regulatory framework, which applies when doing business in Europe. The European Treaties define the rights and obligations of undertakings and individuals in terms of the free movement of goods, services, capital and persons across the Union. Common policies operate to support these freedoms, including competition rules and politics governing corporate behaviour.

The programme builds on two core subjects: EU Competition Law and EU Competition and Regulation. Our fourteen week long in-depth course of EU competition law provides students not only with the legal framework but also some basic economic understanding of competition law. A so-called 'Capita Series' of Competition Law and Regulation addresses the liberalisation rules for different markets or fields and is taught by both internationally respected faculty members and external experts in the respected fields.

The programme consists of several compulsory courses and provides a broad spectrum of topics including European competition law, European company law, the liberalization rules for the EU telecommunications and energy markets, EU banking and insurance directives, EU public procurement, EU social policy, intellectual property rights and private international transactions.
