European Union Business Law

The European Union Business Law programme at the University of Amsterdam has been designed with one single aim: to prepare students with the most essential skills that are indispensable for a professional or academic career in business law.

Even though the programme primarily consists of compulsory courses, it provides a broad spectrum of topics including European competition law, European company law, the liberalization rules for the EU telecommunications and energy markets, EU banking and insurance directives, EU public procurement, EU social policy, intellectual property rights and private international transactions.

Studying European Union Business Law at the University of Amsterdam has the unique advantage of getting in touch with both theory and practice with the help of highly qualified international and European lawyers and lecturers. The quality of the programme is enriched by the University of Amsterdam's double strength in both law and economics through the Amsterdam Centre for Law & Economics (ACLE), which houses over 20 scholars who conduct interdisciplinary research at the interface between these fields. Moreover, students will become familiar with a wide range of European institutions during a study trip in Brussels and will receive guidance in finding internships and in identifying career opportunities once they have successfully completed the Master's programme.'

The European Union Business Law track of the Master's programme in International and European Law focuses on the European public regulatory framework that is encountered when doing business in the EU. The European treaties define the rights and obligations of business and individuals in terms of the free movement of employed persons, goods, services and capital across the Union. Common policies operate to support these freedoms, including competition rules and rules governing good corporate governance.

Studying European Union Business Law at the University of Amsterdam

The curriculum of the track in European Union Business Law follows a coherent set of strongly interrelated core courses which prepare the student for work in the legal service department of a modern European company, a European Union institution or a Member State ministry dealing with business law, as well as for international private practice. All courses are taught by internationally respected faculty members. In addition, the course Capita Selecta, which deals with the EC directives liberalising transborder market access to markets that were hitherto regulated (telecommunications, energy, banking, etc.), features lectures by external guest experts in addition to academic staff of the Faculty of Law.

European Union Business Law as a part-time programme

It is possible to complete the programme in European Union Business Law through part-time study. However, classes are only given during the day, and each course is given only once per year. Part-time students can complete the programme in two years.
