Biblical Studies

The Biblical Studies programme of the Theology and Religious Studies Master offers a wide range of courses, covering

  • The Hebrew Bible and the New Testament
  • Jewish literature from the Second Temple Period and the Early Rabbinic Period
  • Early Christian literature

The programme focuses on the historical and literary contexts in which the Bible took shape and the rich history of its interpretation in various times and situations, in addition to the texts themselves. Looking at the Bible from different angles in this way offers new perspectives on this ancient book.

Studying Biblical Studies at the University of Amsterdam

This programme, offered by the Faculty of Humanities (the largest in the Netherlands), gives students the opportunity to explore the Bible and its history in the stimulating environment of the Art, Religion and Culture department which is located in the heart of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is a city with a rich cultural heritage, the significance of the Bible and its long history are evident everywhere.

Museums such as the Biblical Museum, the Jewish-historical museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Rembrandt Museum all pay witness to its history and influence, as do the rich collections at the University Library and the Rosenthaliana.

Cooperation

The Biblical Studies programme is a joint venture of the University of Amsterdam and the Utrecht University. Courses are in English. Students enrolled at the UvA receive their MA degree in Theology and Religious Studies from the UvA.

Accreditation and degree

Biblical Studies is a track of the Master's degree in Theology and Religious Studies. This programme has been assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon completion of the programme students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Theology and Religion Studies, and the title Master of Arts.
