Artistic Research
A bridge between art and research
The Artistic Research specialisation of the Research programme in Art Studies seeks to form a bridge between art and standard scholarly research by offering insight into and training in new forms of research. These new forms provide an alternative to existing approaches, stressing applied, practical research as opposed to fundamental, theoretical research.
The specialisation in Artistic Research takes an experimental approach to both specific art objects and broader artistic concepts and opens them up to interpretation. Topics and strategies relevant for current scholarly debates and contemporary artistic practice are central.
Studying Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam's (UvA) specialisation in Artistic Research is unique in the Netherlands, providing an alternative to the at times artificial opposition between professional art training and academic programmes for the study of art in the Netherlands. This specialization reflects the flourishing practice of national and international research in the arts.

Accreditation and degree
The quality of this specialisation has been assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive an accredited Master's degree in Arts and Culture and the title Master of Arts.
