Faculty of Humanities
The Faculty of Humanities (FGw) is the biggest faculty of its kind in the Netherlands. The FGw is made up of about 7,500 students and 1000 staff members.
The Faculty is divided into six departments:
- Department of Art, Religion and Cultural Sciences
- Department of Dutch Studies
- Department of History, Archaeology and Area Studies
- Department of Language and Literature
- Department of Media Studies
- Department of Philosophy
The Master’s programmes of the FGw are administratively and organisationally managed by the Graduate School of Humanities. Together, the students and staff of the Graduate School form an academic community in which collaboration across a variety of humanities disciplines is highly valued. This type of interdisciplinary endeavour is both natural and advantageous, as it is common for subjects to be dealt with in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary framework. The social and cultural diversity of the international student community also encourages a productive and stimulating exchange of knowledge and opinions.
As the focal point of Dutch arts and culture, Amsterdam offers many exciting opportunities for humanities students. The Faculty collaborates with many, mostly Amsterdam-based, institutions in the fields of science, arts and culture.
Education and research are closely intertwined at the University of Amsterdam. The research conducted at the Faculty of Humanities has a markedly international character and is organised within the following research institutes:
- Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC)
- Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA)
- Institute for Culture and History (ICH)
- Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC)
The research institutes have a strong influence on the content and curriculums of the GSH Research Master’s programmes.
