Ecology and Evolution

Sustaining natural biodiversity and protecting the environment is impossible without extensive knowledge of ecology and evolution. The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) offers a state-of-the-art Master's programme in Ecology and Evolution. The aim of the programme is to promote understanding of

  • the relationships between living organisms
  • the extinction and evolution of species
  • the functioning of ecosystems
  • how organisms live, interact and disperse on earth

A joint programme of the VU University and the UvA

As of 1 September 2012, the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam offer a joint programme Ecology and Evolution. This collaboration results in a high-quality Master of Science programme: students can enjoy the expertise of two universities, providing a rich and varied programme of courses as well as ample pure and applied research projects.

Evolution Biologist Prof. Steph Menken talks about 'biological fitness' in the UvA video series 'The Fascination'. Watch the video (in Dutch) via the link below.

Accreditation and degree

Ecology and Evolution is a track of the Master's programme in Biological Sciences. This programme has been accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). Upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a Master's degree in Biological Sciences and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
