Professional specialization (master major) within a Master’s programme

In general, Master’s students are trained to become independent researchers. But at the UvA Faculty of Science you can also choose to complete your Master’s programme with a professionally oriented major that focuses on other skills than doing research. In that case you will follow the programme of your chosen scientific discipline during the first year of your Master’s, and the programme of the major during the second year. You will graduate as a Master of Science.

There are two master majors available:

  • Science Communication (in Dutch only)
  • Management, Policy Analysis & Entrepreneurship.

The Major Teaching is no longer available. Please contact Erik Joling for further information.

Within which Master’s programmes?

The master majors are available within most two-year Master’s programmes of the UvA Faculty of Science. Ask coördinator Erik Joling for details concerning the Master's programme of your choice.

Course language

The courses of the major Management, Policy Analysis & Entrepreneurship are taught in English.
The courses of the majors Science Communication and Teaching are taught in Dutch.

Entry requirements

If you are admitted to a Master’s programme within which the master majors are available, you are automatically admissible to a master major within that programme, except for the major Teaching in certain cases. For more information, please check out the page concerning the major Teaching.
