Discourse Argumentation Studies
Curriculum
Discourse and Argumentation Studies
This programme has several key objectives. First it aims to give students a general introduction to the field of discourse and argumentation studies. It also gives them the opportunity to gain practical experience in the descriptive and normative analysis of argumentative discourse. Building on this foundation, the programme provides students with more specialised and profound knowledge of and insight into the fields of discourse analysis and argumentation theory. Finally, the programme offers students the tools necessary for conducting independent evaluations and research in the field of discourse and argumentation studies.
Programme outline
The programme yields 90 ECTS credits: 72 credits for core courses and internships, and 18 credits for a thesis. The core courses and electives depend on the student's previous qualifications. The choice of courses is subject to the approval of the academic adviser.
The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications. Given the unique character of this programme and its advanced level, students should plan on needing one-and-a-half years to fulfil all the requirements.
Thesis
The thesis reports on research are carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s).

Credit transfer
Students who show exceptional promise during a Regular or Professional programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research programme. Once students are admitted to the Research programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research programme degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.
