Cognitive Neuroscience (MSc)

Programme outline

The focus of this programme is on a neuroscientific approach to cognition. A question characteristic for this programme is: how  do neural processes such as spikes and synaptic plasticity give rise to memory, conscious perception and behavioral decisions? A distinctive feature of the program is its multi-level approach to cognition: we study the ‘stuff that dreams are made of’ from the perspectives of neurochemistry and electrophysiology of neuronal networks and neurocomputational modeling, and from the behavioral and psychophysical level, and study macroscopic brain function using brain imaging (fMRI) and brain stimulation (e.g. TMS) techniques. The programme aims at understanding how the brain implements cognitive processes by studying information processing in the healthy, active brain, but also by computer stimulation and interventional approaches targeting causal functions. In this programme the pathological brain is equally captivating as the healthy brain and will be highlighted by studying neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Cognitive Sciences

The MSc programme in Cognitive Neuroscience is a track within the master's programme in Cognitive Sciences; as such graduates receive a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Cognitive Sciences.
