Studying Psychology as a temporary student
International students who are interested in temporarily studying at the Department of Psychology can either come through an official exchange programme, or as an independent fee-paying student.
Temporarily studying Psychology means taking part in a non-degree programme. The Department of Psychology does not offer any complete bachelor's or master's degree programme in English. Students who are interested in obtaining a master's degree, please refer to the section below for more information about enrolling in a regular study programme taught in Dutch.
There are only a few psychology courses in English available, and these are all advanced level courses. Students who speak Dutch can also choose courses from the regular, Dutch curriculum. Learning Dutch is therefore strongly recommended! Depending on the candidate's background in psychology and available places in the course, students could enrol in the regular Psychology courses.
Exchange and independent students
Students who are enrolled at a university, which has an exchange agreement with the Universiteit van Amsterdam, can participate in an exchange programme.
If being an exchange student is not an option, it is still possible to take several courses at the Department of Psychology as an independent tuition fee-paying student.
The costs for this, besides a € 50,- euro application fee, are € 100,- euro per credit, with a maximum of € 1500,- per semester for a maximum of 30 EC. The tuition fee has to be paid before the start of the course. The application fee of € 50 has to be paid at the time of application in order to get evaluated and accepted .
Degree programmes in Psychology
Bachelor's and master's programmes in Psychology are taught in Dutch.
Students who wish to do a complete Psychology programme and obtain their bachelor's degree at the UvA, will have to learn Dutch first. Furthermore they have to follow an application procedure and meet with certain entry requirements. They can find more information on the web site 'Studying in Dutch'. Click on the link below to go to this web site.
Students with a foreign bachelor's degree in Psychology who wish to continue their studies for a master's degree in Psychology at the UvA, have to follow the same application procedure to become a regular UvA-student. Moreover, their specific background in Psychology will be evaluated by the Department of Psychology. This happens for each file individually. The study advisers of the Department of Psychology will advise the exam committee as to which bachelor's courses the student will have to follow before entering the master's programme. Usually, students will not be exempted from following part of the bachelor's programme in Psychology, not even students from other Dutch universities! The reason for this is that each Psychology programme has its own signature and emphasis. Therefore, students should count on two more years of study minimally before they can obtain their master's degree in Psychology.
