Faculty of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. It consists of six schools:

  • Dutch Studies
  • History, Archaeology and Area Studies
  • Language and Literature
  • Philosophy
  • Media studies
  • Art, religion and Cultural Studies

These schools provide a wide range of bachelor's and master's programmes.

Studying at the Faculty of Humanities as an exchange student

The Faculty of Humanities participates in several exchange programmes, such as the Erasmus programme. The faculty does not accept free-movers or students from universities without a bilateral agreement.

The faculty offers various study options to international students. Exchange students can participate in courses from the faculty's bachelor's programme and in certain master's programmes. The faculty collaborates closely with the College of Social Sciences (CS)  and other UvA faculties.

Former exchange students sent us their testimonials. As one student from Spain mentioned: ''I realised that I was not wrong when I chose my studies. I started to love what I’m doing/studying.' For further experiences about living in Amsterdam and studying at the faculty of Humanities you can read our testimonials.

Research:
Advanced students preparing for their final thesis are allowed to do individual research at the faculty of Humanities providing there is a bilateral agreement between the universities.
