Psychology (certificate courses)
Certificate courses in Psychology at the UvA
Studying Psychology as a temporary student
The Department of Psychology does not offer a complete Bachelor's programme in English. Our regular Master's programmes are also taught in Dutch. The two-year Research Master's programme is our only fully English-taught programme. Students who are interested in obtaining a Dutch Bachelor's or Master's degree should refer to the section below for more information about enrolling in a regular study programme taught in Dutch.
For students who are only interested in temporarily studying psychology at the UvA, there are a few courses available in English. These are all advanced level courses and are part of a non-degree programme.
International students who are interested in temporarily studying at the Department of Psychology can either come through an official exchange programme, or as an independent fee-paying student. If you wish to apply as an Erasmus exchange or independent student, please use the application form attached below. If your university has a bilateral agreement with the University of Amsterdam, please contact the International Office Coordinator at your home university for information about how to apply.
Temporary students from abroad can choose courses from our selection of English-taught courses. The courses vary from year to year. Please refer to the 'Psychology courses in English' link below for an overview and the course descriptions.
Students who speak Dutch can also choose courses from the regular Dutch curriculum. See the link below for the regular (Dutch) course catalogue.
Exchange students are usually allowed to take one course outside the psychology department. You can browse the online UvA Course Catalogue (see link below) to search for English-taught courses outside the Department of Psychology.
Exchange and independent students
Students who are enrolled at a university, which has an exchange agreement with the University of Amsterdam, can participate in an exchange programme.
If being an exchange student is not an option, it is still possible to take several courses at the Department of Psychology as an independent tuition fee-paying student.
The costs for this, besides a €50,- application fee, are €65,- per credit, up to €900,- per semester for a maximum of 30 ECTS. The tuition fee has to be paid before the start of the course. An application fee of €50 has to be paid in order to get registered.
Degree programmes in Psychology
Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Psychology taught in Dutch.
Students who wish to do a complete psychology programme and obtain their Bachelor's degree at the UvA, will have to learn Dutch first. Furthermore, they have to follow an application procedure and meet certain entry requirements. They can find more information on the website 'Studying in Dutch'. Click on the link below to go to this website.
Only our two-year Research Master's programme is taught entirely in English. Please refer to the research Master's website (see link below) for information about this programme, the entry requirements and the application procedure.
Students with a foreign Bachelor's degree in Psychology who wish to continue their studies for one of our regular Master's degree programme in Psychology, have to follow the same application procedure to become a regular UvA student. Moreover, their specific background in psychology will be evaluated by the Department of Psychology. This happens individually for each student. The study advisers of the Department of Psychology will recommend to the exam committee which Bachelor's courses the student will have to follow before entering the Master's programme. Usually, students will not be exempted from following part of the Bachelor's programme in Psychology, not even students from other Dutch universities! The reason for this is that each psychology programme has its own signature and emphasis. Therefore, students should count on a minimum of two more years of study before they can obtain their Master's degree in Psychology.
