The Law, Culture and Society programme is a unique opportunity for students interested in law, and attending law school in particular, to learn more about the discipline and the legal profession in an international and intercultural setting.

During the one-semester programme, students will:

  • acquire knowledge of the American legal system in particular, and legal theory in general, through a comparative and international perspective;
  • familiarise themselves with the multifaceted aspects of the legal profession through visits to national and international institutions;
  • focus on societal and cultural topics that influence the law and the legal profession in today’s world;
  • develop their argumentation and discourse skills.

In addition, students will learn more about the US Law School's application procedures.

Certificate and transcript

All students who complete the undergraduate certificate programme in Law, Culture and Society will receive a transcript upon request, stating the courses they registered for and the credits and grades the received. Upon successful completion of the programme, students are issued a certificate by the University of  Amsterdam.

Student profile

International students interested in pursuing the undergraduate certificate programme in Law, Culture and Society at the University of Amsterdam should have completed at least two years of their Bachelor's degree at their home university and have a good academic standing.

Commencement and duration

The Law, Culture and Society programme is offered each semester (September-December and February-June).

The programme is offered by the UvA's College of Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Chicago-based Institute for the International Education of Students (IES Abroad).
